I had a really bad call last night,
A baby died in front of my eyes, another old patient died next to her, and I had such difficult cases, most had to be sent within the hour to Queen for further management impossible in my hospital, and needed constant doctor supervision/escort..up until this morning.
Motivation and inspiration is important to keep yourself sane in moments like these so I watched "The last lecture" by the late Randy Pausch.. I watched a shortened version a few years ago (I think it was on oprah)
His "last lecture" was so good, he was listed by Times Magazines in the "100 most inpirational people" list
read more if you want the the complete version
I was tired and cancelled most of my plans for the day, but I made a new friend in the peads dept, and a sense that I contributed somewhat to helping a few lives..
Here's the long version
A few lessons I'd like to point out in this lecture is
1. the brick walls are there for a reason : they let us prove how badly we want things
3. though not in the lecture, remember to live the day as if it is your last, and work as if you'll be working there a thousand years
4. the importance of "head fakes"
5. have something to bring to the table, because then you will be more welcome
6. show gratitude, and give credit when credit's due
7. a good apology should have 3 parts - the apology, admit your fault, and attempt to make it right again
8. The people who criticize you are the ones who care for you the most, when you see yourself doing something badly, and nobody's saying anything to you anymore, that's a very bad place to be
9. experience is what you get when you didnt get what you want, meaning you can get more from not achieving your dreams than actually achieving it.
interesting stuff I read on the way
- the vomit comet
- the alice programme
-the dutch-uncle concept
