Happy New Year!!

This is actually a long ago post which wasnt published, but i'm not wasting time writing a new one...

What have I done for myself with my gaji?
I bought a fridge, a phone (the old one “collapsed”- i did manage to “revive” the old chap but it wasn’t working as well anymore), and lotsa food for each meal i could get my hands on..
Am planning to get some wheels, maybe a pda (the quick reference is really helpful in the wards), and i might move out some time this year.
Other than that I’ve been saving more or less...i still haven’t got my 4 months’ worth of on-calls (i get 8 calls every month) but I’m not really in a hurry to get it,they can give it in bulk later, I’m quite comfortable already.
Have you heard about the day off for the doctor on-call? No formal circulation is out, but the consultants doubt that it could happen..firstly if in HTAR, it would mean 7 housemen would be missing out of 20 something, and that’s not counting those taking their rest leave and EL..
Secondly if 4-5 out of 6 HOs in charge of one ward were on call that night, then the next day would be haywire if only 1-2 housemen were to take charge of 60+ patients, when previously they had only one cubicle..i had a similar day once (new housemen went for orientation,2 were on leave)..and it was not pretty
My personal opinion- how about giving those post-callers a half-day...they wont need to clerk any admissions for the day...just finish the rounds and any other issues in their cubicles, and go home early just like any weekend. It’s plausible..at least better than the day off idea...any qid monitoring or pm stuff could be covered by others in the ward.
Maybe I should get this stuff straight to MOH, and maybe I should iron my clothes too once in a while, maybe I should jog once in a while and maybe i should wait for that proverbial blue moon first.hehe..
PS: do you think I should stop using the READ MORE button for each posting? It seems to make us do an extra click to get to the full posting, a real pain in the neck if your wireless internet has problems catching up with a turtle in a race..heck, I can't even properly download my YM these past few months...

Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri!!

Maaf Zahir Dan Batin

here's to all who know me, and know me well enough to frequent this blog, even though it's been irregularly updated since the past 3 years - thank you

Im now a houseman in HTAR Klang,in the medical department, living in the hostel for 1 year
Im working 7 days a week, seven to eight on calls a month, with about 10 days of holidays for 4 months (including this 5 day Hari Raya break, which was a miracle i could get 5 days)

I had a needle prick incident on my 3rd or 2nd week of work...the patient was restrained by two policemen but still managed to kick me lightly- enough to cause the needle prick as i was setting his brenula. So currently Im on meds, Combivir to be exact..and boy does it have side effects
lesson of that day: assess the patient you're going to prick first

i've learnt a lot more but it would take too long to list everything.

A little advice for my dear juniors in Russia:

...lepas 3rd year try la wat attachment, especially kat hosp tertiery/besar
biasekan diri ngan hosp2 kite, sistem2 kite
aku blaja sistem rusia je..pening stat keje
tapi rugi la klu kite tolak sistem tempat kite blaja sendiri...byk bende yg bagus kat dlm sistem rusia...

(i copied it from a recent YM chat...got too lazy to rewrite everything)

PS: no i dont have a car yet, I'm not planning anything except trying to do my job right (and finishing off those discharge summaries piling up), I received my first rounded up paycheck about a week ago (found out yesterday), and I disowned my last camera and gave it to my sister who's going to USA next year, so currently I don't have anything to record vids and pics with...too bad

have a great hari raya everyone, hope you had a nice ramadhan this year

And Life Goes On..

"We DID IT!!"
congratulations to everyone in my 2002-2008 batch of medical students in Russia!!
we finally made it safely to the other side,
and now we're doctors!!

so what happens now?
this is the end of a chapter in our lives,
and a beginning of a new, bigger and insyaAllah better one..

oh the usual... nearly everyone's registered with the MOH,MMC and SPA, and waiting for their posts.. some like eric opted for the army..
some are getting married like gmi in kelantan. He's going to move to bangi in a rented house with his wife..he sounds pretty happy on the phone, hehe good luck mate
some like yik, bought cars, computers, clothes etc for work..
a few others are taking their licenses..usen, yik, wen im (i think)
the sarawakian girls (wan tsien, beatrice) are undergoing btn as we speak
some, like Jana, are going places, like India.most of us had a few trips to other cities in Russia namely kazan, moscow, sochi, and st petersburg (i think the moscovites have recently finished their trips, they'll be backe on the 25th)..undoubtly most of the volgogradians have visited their families and kampung..
the nizhny novgorodians have come back too. They brought back taiko and jimis' documents from the embassy a few days ago..
some spend their holidays meeting friends and meeting families..
i stayed at home and *cough* read comics and a few books like the annotated sun tzu's art of war for management, some mags, and *cough* a few medical books..and was online virtually every waking minute...but neglecting to add anything on my blogs and stuff..dunno, I just didn't feel like it. No pearls of wisdom from me..seriously, this is the only thing i could come up with.

But all this will end soon..and so begins a new chapter- work!

I'll begin mine soon- on the 31st of july will be my BTN, followed by the induction till the 19th of August. I'll be there with a few volgograd students- li fan and ragesh (so far).

I'm skipping almost everything- gmi's wedding, zulfaizal's wedding, nadiah moscow's wedding, some ppim and other camps and stuff..but i wont be in most of them anyway, i was in Labuan, and i promised to take care of my older brother while my parents go to my younger brother's graduation this august..(and all this seem to fantastically clash as if the dates for everything was pins and a bowling ball of 2-3 days crashes into it with a strike)
So in short i wont be going for any of them. Straight to work for me. Work work.
I'll keep to myself first, which hospitals did I choose. Most of you reading this already know, or can readily guess, I think.
You'll know eventually.PS: I love Kartik's look searching for his mortarboard. Priceless.
(you should have seen the others' too..miliseconds later)

Why did the Chicken Cross The Road?

I had too much time recently, but I don't feel like writing a story of my life just yet.
instead, I tried solving the more difficult questions in life, like
why did the chicken crossed the road...
here are some opinions from well known figures

BARACK OBAMA:

The chicken crossed the road because it was time for a CHANGE! The chicken wanted CHANGE!

JOHN MC CAIN:

My friends, that chicken crossed the road because he recognized the need to engage in cooperation and dialogue with all the chickens on the other side of the road.

HILLARY CLINTON:

When I was First Lady, I personally helped that little chicken to cross the road. This experience makes me uniquely qualified to ensure -- right from Day One! -- that every chicken in this country gets the chance it deserves to cross the road. But then, this really isn't about me.......

GEORGE W. BUSH:

We don't really care why the chicken crossed the road. We just want to know if the chicken is on our side of the road, or not. The chicken is either against us, or for us. There is no middle ground here. If the chicken is against us, it must be dealt with quickly and severely. A loose chicken can be a dangerous terrorist threat to the free world!

DICK CHENEY:

Where's my gun?

COLIN POWELL:

Now to the left of the screen, you can clearly see the satellite image of the chicken crossing the road...

BILL CLINTON:

I did not cross the road with THAT chicken. What is your definition of chicken?

AL GORE:

I invented the chicken!

JOHN KERRY:

Although I voted to let the chicken cross the road, I am now against it! It was the wrong road to cross, and I was misled about the chicken's intentions. I am not for it now, and will remain against it.

PAT BUCHANAN:

Obviously the chicken intended to steal the job of a decent, hardworking American.

DR. PHIL:

The problem we have here is that this chicken won't realize that he must first deal with the problem on 'THIS' side of the road before it goes after the problem on the 'OTHER SIDE' of the road. What we need to do is help him realize how stupid he's acting by not taking on his 'CURRENT' problems before adding 'NEW' problems.

OPRAH:

Well, I understand that the chicken is having problems, which is why he wants to cross this road so bad. So instead of having the chicken learn from his mistakes and take falls, which is a part of life, I'm going to

give this chicken a car so that he can just drive across the road and not live his life like the rest of the chickens.

ANDERSON COOPER - CNN:

We have reason to believe there is a chicken, but we have not yet been

allowed to have access to the other side of the road.

BARBARA WALTERS:

Isn't that interesting? In a few moments, we will be listening to the chicken tell, for the first time, the heart warming story of how it experienced a serious case of molting, and went on to accomplish its life long dream of crossing the road.

NANCY GRACE:

That chicken crossed the road because he's GUILTY! You can see it in his eyes and the way he walks.

MARTHA STEWART:

No one called me to warn me which way that chicken was going. I had a standing order at the Farmer's Market to sell my eggs when the price dropped to a certain level. No 'little bird' gave me any insider information.

DR SEUSS:

Did the chicken cross the road? Did he cross it with a toad? Yes, the chicken crossed the road, but why it crossed I've not been told.

ERNEST HEMINGWAY:

To die in the rain. Alone.

GRANDPA:

In my day we didn't ask why the chicken crossed the road. Somebody told us the chicken crossed the road, and that was good enough for us.

ARISTOTLE:

It is the nature of chickens to cross the road.

ALBERT EINSTEIN:

Did the chicken really cross the road, or did the road move beneath the chicken?

COLONEL SANDERS:

Did I miss one?

JOHN LENNON:

Imagine all the chickens in the world crossing roads together, in peace.

BILL GATES:

I have just released eChicken2007, which will not only cross roads, but will lay eggs, file your important documents, and balance your check book. Internet Explorer is an integral part of the Chicken. This new

platform is much more stable and will never crash...#@&&^(C% ......... reboot

Happy Mother's Day

Today is a special day. Mothers' Day.
I'm not really good at speaking stuff like this. But being one who has set up a blog to connect to others, I might as well try and say something.

Being the flawed person that I am, I made especially sure to put a reminder for this day. among the usual birthday and other days. But unfortunately I overslept as I didn't sleep much. The holiday (Den Pabedy) was a lot more busier than I thought. I tried calling home but she wasn't there, but I did speak with my sister who got an offer by MARA. Then I had to do some things which I had promised.
Since I didn't get to say it personally, I'll give my wishes here

Happy Mother's Day!
Happy Mother's Day
We love you always

For some who has been there for me no matter what, this is the least I could do

have you ever wondered what a mother's day is like?
for nine months we were parasites inside her womb. when we got got, she lost sleep and just to feed us. Our days as children were not always ice cream and fun. those grazed knees, crying bouts and spilled ice cream is just another's mother's day.
What about those times you made a racket, about that thing you always wanted? or those dangerous times you made your mother worry? have you ever thought what her day had been like? instead of thinking of only you?
I've never been much too...
even being so far away, I know she always thinks of her children, and worry about them anytime she has a reason to. Being the type who's bad at long distance relationships ( I mean relationship as a whole. I've never even considered myself capable of having a girlfriend far away)
I try my best to stay in contact with this one special lady. Though it's not much, I know she understands. And now I understand too, even a few words is enough. Just enough to show that we're there, we're ok, we remember her, but mostly that everyone's fine
that's just a few of all the days that our mother goes through, and today is only one of them..

so this is where I get my habits in front of the camera

the stinging nettle

W

ho would have thought an innocent-looking little plant like this could make such problems for me?

As a sign of respect for what it did to me, and for the 'dendam' I'll keep with me, i've dedicated this post to this little bugger.

would you like to see its thorns?

Here it is!

you can barely see the thorns till you get close enough, but you sure can feel them
Till it pricked me, I didnt even take a second glance at it, but now, i get curious about ALL plants, and get a bit jumpy if I'm too near..
there it is sitting near the windowsill, looking as innocent as all the other plants, the Russians seem to like to grow plants on their windowsill. I wonder would they grow thorny ones
looks more like soft hair
3 of my fingers developed itchiness, and little 'mosquito bites' appeared (can anyone come up with an English or Malay term for this?), with redness... later my previously mild symptoms of headaches, rhinorrhea, sore throat and high temperature episodes worsened.

next up - riviera, and my final polyclinic class, if I have the time

mei already?kirovsky and blog updates

Other than the gynecology cycle tomorrow which, undoubtly will be as much of a headache as last time, this week I'll be helping out with the campaign for the funding of the kirovskiy masjid - some interviews, articles, the blog. It's a great opportunity for insyaAllah a continuos good deed.

to find out more about the kirovskiy masjid campaign, please click this link to the blog.

If you noticed, i've added some features on this blog, so that it'll be easier to read (bigger, clearer fonts, layout, brighter colours) and the newer posts will be only partly shown, to make it easier to browse, and lose some megabytes for you megabyte-conscious people, and also ease up on loading this page.
so please remember to click the READ MORE! button if you wish to - well, read more

Some other new, interesting features are the recent posts, and the picture slideshow, though only about the latest travel in egypt about 4 months ago. I guess I got a little bit excited tweaking up the template.

If anyone has any trouble loading this page, or a certain feature is eating up too much time or megabytes, please tell me. I'm also rather curious about how this page looks like in other computer browsers. To me it fits just nice, but for some it might look weird (too wide, or too big, with disproportionate side bars, text, headlines, etc.)i'm looking forward to improving this blog more, insyaAllah.

I've been thinking a lot about the future lately, and this blog's future. The past two years, i haven't updated this blog for months at times, and in the next two years, insyaAllah I'll be doing my housemanship. But the purpose of this blog is still the same, to connect me to anyone reading this, specifically family, friends, blogger friends and generally to anyone interested, no matter how long the interval between one post and the next. So for better or for worse, I will keep on blogging insyaAllah. Hopefully I can be one of those bloggers who are already working, with families of their own, who are still actively blogging and even inspiring others.
If possible, it'll be interesting, especially for other med students still learning next year, to know what I'll be doing after graduation and during housemanship. What are the chances of blogging as a HO in Malaysia? Maybe I should start a poll. Next time, hehe.

if you look at my timetable on the right, you'll see that there's not much time left. Some might wonder if I should even be blogging right now. But sometimes I'll do stuff like this to keep me off the pressure.

But I'll be needing support, and I seriously need to have more motivation and hopefully, reignite that 'passion' for learning medicine.

cuti mei

bismillah

unfortunately for me i spent most of my holiday with a runny nose, headaches, chills and a sore throat (personally i blame the stinging nettle that pricked me in class for making my previously mild symptoms worse). hmm, maybe it was actually fortunate, that i didnt have to go to classes for three days, insyaAllah enough time for me to get well, and i dont have to 'obrabot', or 'ganti klas'. in the mean time, i skipped those meetings i was supposed to go in the 2 mosques that we have, but i did go to the final day of our football league today, and took loads of pics and vids...hopefully i didnt infect anyone..hehe

here are some pics..maybe i should cut on the pic posts or just make a link to my other dusty fotopages...

never shout

assalamualaikum wbt

never shout, the lower voice is heard better

a reminder for me, because i know this, but still can't apply it well enough (in chinese kung fu stories, having a booming voice means the character has a strong and rich inner strength.. :p)

now I empathise with some of the Russians who were perceived as either rude or brash by us Malaysians, but as i got to know them better, it's only their voice is that much louder, and to them raising your voice when speaking out is normal and doenst need a retort (in most cases, unless I'm the one preceiving it wrongly)

the only remedy i found to stop the ensuing bickering (which Alhamdulillah, is not that often, though at the time this post is written it might have happende recently) is to keep my voice lower even if the other side has started picking up a fight. miraculously this works, but my own temper needs to be in check.

I'm in my surgical rotation, and I've seen how the surgeons here, with their own professional opinions, stick to what they believe in, while arguing with the other surgeons.I guess when you make life-dependent decisions on a daily basis, you'l have to have that kind of confidence, to be reliable. but almost all the time, the arguments will suddenly stop, with the decision up to each other. i guess their purpose was only to better themselves and their colleagues, and as long as there's no big medical mistake, or anything, it's never a big deal.in the end they respected each other's opinion and let the responsible surgeon disembowel the patient however he wants,or however the higher ranking surgeon wants.

another thing is to acknowledge when you're wrong -this is hard.

next time i find myself at odds with anyone, i'll try to remember to keep calm, lower my voice, acknowledge anything the other party is right, and focus on what's really important at hand, insyaAllah.

an old picture, amputating the right ankle (not really sure which part exactly)

in one month's time we'll have our mcqs, then final exams in june..
